about this variety

beloved south african favorite producing small, round, dark green squashes perfect for individual servings. gem squash is a staple in ZA cuisine, traditionally boiled and served with butter and cinnamon sugar.

these are easy to grow, and form compact bush plants which produce abundantly. harvest when tennis-ball sized for the most tender texture. the mild, slightly sweet flesh is incredibly versatile - boil, bake, or stuff.

low in calories but rich in vitamins a and c, potassium, and fiber. stores well and improves in flavor after a few weeks.

squash and pumpkins grow best in warm, sunny conditions and rich, well-drained soil. sow seeds 2–3 cm deep directly in the garden or in pots once the soil has warmed (18–25 °c). be sure to plant the seeds on their side as this helps faster germination, which usually takes 7–14 days.

space plants generously, as they spread widely, and keep soil moist. harvest fruits when fully coloured and firm.
